What is Hepatitis A?
QA15_02b
Hepatitis A is a viral disease that affects the liver. It is spread by consuming food and drink that has been contaminated by faeces from an infected person. The average incubation period is 30 days, but you can fall ill anywhere between 15 and 50 days after exposure to the virus.
Some of the symptoms could be mistaken for a general virus, for example, fever, nausea, abdominal discomfort and dark urine. However, the defining symptom is the appearance of yellow skin and eyes.
The Hepatitis A virus can be transferred into food items by an infected person, therefore it is important to ensure that those infected do not prepare food.
There are steps your business can take to prevent any potential contamination:
- Wash hands properly
- Avoid bare hand contact with food
- Exclude infected employees from work
